Ilocos Sur farmers hope for high rice yield with "good" rains
VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur - Farmers are setting their sight on a high rice production as a result of recent storms which brought beneficial rains for their farmlands.Teofilo Quintal, provincial agriculturist, said farmers started planting rice due to the succeeding rainfall brought by typhoons Glenda and Henry.
He said farmers were delayed in planting for the cropping season this year but many still expect to have sufficient rice harvest.
Farmers are relying on the equipment provided under the farm mechanization Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 1 and local governments from machineries and tractor which they use in rotation so they can prepare their farmlands adequately including areas covered by irrigation system, water wells and small farm reservoir.
Meanwhile, the municipal rice program coordinators in various towns continue to visit the barangays and the techno-demo of hybrid and certified seeds including the seed production area so they can get the actual area planted.
The support of the provincial government under Gov. Ryan Singson in applying for the counterpart scheme with the DA for the recipient-associations are intended to continually attain food sufficiency for Ilocos Sur residents. (Nila Argel/MCA/MNOA /PIA1 Ilocos Sur)
