Benguet holds Climate Change advocacy training
LA TRINIDAD, Benguet - More than 50 representatives from local government units, and private institutions from the 13 municipalities of Benguet attended a two-day speakers bureau training on July 24 and 25 at the Strawberry Valley Hotel and Restaurant here in efforts to empowering local links that would help in climate change adaptation and mitigation advocacy.The training was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, through its Benguet Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, and in partnership with the Philippine Information Agency – Cordillera Regional Office.
Benguet PENRO OIC Octavio Cuanso, in opening training, called for a stronger partnership, complementation and collaboration in bringing in relevant information and in strengthening the advocacy on climate change mitigation and adaptation. He also emphasized that through the knowledge to be shared by the training resource persons, the training becomes the venue to fully capacitate multipliers that would help in the IEC (Information, education and communication) down to the grassroots level.
PIA - CAR Regional Director Helen Tibaldo, in an inspirational message, pointed-out that climate change is now a reality that is affecting communities and the environment, which is why it is important for people to be pro-active and focus on preparedness, for people to plan, to cushion the immediate and future impacts of climate change.
The training aims to establish a convergence of effort with local partners, to harmonize and popularize the message and call to action on climate change adaptation and mitigation, where each one can commit to prepare and act, Tibaldo stressed.
She also shared that DENR and PIA, in collaboration with other partner agencies, civil society organizations, academe and media practitioners are undertaking climate change adaptation and mitigation advocacy dubbed as, “Nagbabagong Panahon, Panahon na Para Magbago”, which focuses on putting the hearts, minds and souls of every individual on environmental protection and preservation and actions for a greener lifestyle.
For the first day of the training, PAGASA - Baguio Meteorologist Danny Galati gave a lecture on the Climate Change Phenomenon, Engr. Tuho Chapdian of Benguet Provincial Planning and Development Office on Climate Change and Environment and DILG Provincial director Rufina Fegcan on Climate Change and Local Governance, while Benguet State University (BsU) Planning and Development Office director Dr. Maria Luz Fangasan gave a lecture and workshop on effective message delivery.
For the second day, BSU – College of Forestry Professor Kenneth Laruan gave a lecture on Climate Change and Forestry, BSU – CSAC Director Carlito Laurean on Climate Change and Agriculture, Wilhelmina Lagunilla of DENR – Environment Management Bureau on Climate Change and Air Pollution and its health effects and BSU Developmental Communication Department chair Christine Sidchogan conducted a lecture on workshop on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation advocacy module preparations.
The participants signified their commitment to the advocacy by putting in their individual advocacies to a “Tree of Commitment”. (Carlito Dar/JDP/CCD – PIA CAR)
