PhilNOS promotes ‘I’m a Lifeline’ organ donation advocacy
BAGUIO CITY - The Department of Health (DOH), through the Philippine Network for Organ Sharing(PhilNOS), in partnership with the National Kidney Transplant Institute, brought its “ I am a Lifeline” organ donation advocacy caravan here last July 23 to encourage more people to be organ donors and be a lifeline.PhilNOS Program Manager Dr. Antonio Paraiso, in a press conference at the Azalea Residences, disclosed that the advocacy caravan is part of the Philippine Organ Donation and Transplantation Program (PODTP) which aims to promote and increase awareness on the deceased (organ) donor program, eliminate the negative connotations associated with the term “organ donation”, increase advocacy against “organ trafficking” and to establish a national registry of organ donor, through the signing of official PhilNOS Organ Donor Card.
Paraiso pointed out that there are people with strong principles and with an objective of redirecting the image that one is not merely an organ donor but a lifeline, a declaration of one commitment to be a lifesaver today and beyond life, thus created the “I’m a Lifeline” organ donation advocacy.
Paraiso shared that vital organ failure, especially kidney, remains among the top cause of death in the country. By the end of 2013, there were 23,364 patients who are into kidney dialysis including more than 12,000 new patients.
He also shared that in 2013, there were 23 kidney transplant procedures performed while this 2014, there were already 34 transplant operations made.
“Kidney transplant can extend the life of the recipient for five to ten years though lack of organ donors remains to be a concern”, Paraiso said.
Last February 28, PhilNOS “I’m a LifeLine” campaign pushing for the deceased organ donation advocacy beat the Guinness World Record for “Most People to Sign up as Organ Donors for one Hour Single Site” and set new records for most people to sign up as organ donor for one hour and eight hours in multiple sites.
So far, around 22,000 lifeline donors already signed-up the PhilNOS official organ donor card.
To further spread the advocacy and encourage more to be organ donors and be a lifeline, the ‘I’m a LifeLine’ campaign is currently on an advocacy caravan in several North Luzon provinces.
Starting July 22, the caravan is going around North Luzon with a mobile registration booth in sites visited including Dagupan, Pangasinan; Baguio City; San Fernando, La Union; Vigan, Ilocos Sur; Batac, Ilocos Norte; Tuguegarao, Cagayan Valley; Isabela; Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya, and Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.
