Think God upsets UB by ‘come from behind’ victory


The Province of La Union continues to make its strong presence felt in basketball as the Think God Basketball Team of BM Manuel Victor “Mannix” R. Ortega, Jr. spoiled the eminent victory of the University of Baguio (UB) Men’s Basketball Team in an exhibition game held last July 22 at Easter School, Baguio City via an 83-76 come from behind victory.

During the first quarter, veterans MackyMondina, AtongCariño, Melvin Fontanilla, Max Pulido and Board Member Mannix were able to tie the score at 23 apiece.  For the second quarter, new young recruits made up of Christian Corpuz, Charles Tristan Alviar, Rico Francisco and Mathew Forlaje led the team of La Union.  But after and 3rd quarter, the University of Baguio Cardinals’ lead ballooned to 17 points.  Like a true veteran, Board Member Mannix decided to sit down and concentrate in coaching the team. 

He instructed Fontanilla to release three points and make strong drives to fish priceless fouls.  He also advised the newcomers to make their presence felt under the board and show their scoring potentials.  Like loyal soldiers, Fontanilla released a foray of three pointers, successfully sinking in seven shots from his 10 attempts.  All in all, the former Philippine Basketball League star contributed 41 points, nine rebounds and 4 assists.

With the monstrous rebounds and timely screens provided by Cariño, Pulido and Mondina, the neophytes proved their worth as they chipped in 21 combined points.  The victory silenced the hometown crowd. 
Board Member Mannix congratulated the team, especially the new players, for giving all their efforts like true athletes. 

The Think God Basketball Team has been responsible for the growing popularity of basketball in the province.  It has been conducting free basketball clinics to kids in the province especially in far-flung areas.  It does not only enhance basketball skills but it also instills the value of sportsmanship and camaraderie. In advocating righteousness, the group also distributes free rosaries other than the free basketballs and jerseys that it gives to successful trainees.  For such feat, the Think God Basketball Team was accorded with the Basi Award during the Pammadayaw 2014 in celebration of the Province’ 164th Foundation Anniversary.  It is an award given to Non-Government Organizations based in La Union that have contributed to the progress and development of the province. All systems go on climate change campaign in Region 1

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union - It's all systems go for the regional launch of the government's climate change advocacy campaign which the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) jointly mounted since early this year.

The campaign is launched in San Fernando City in La Union, considered the government's regional center, on August 6, Wednesday with partners from the government and non-government sector including the youth sector.

The campaign was earlier launched at the national level at the Philippine Information Agency Central Office in Quezon City on July 18.

In the region, the DENR and PIA lined up day-long activities from storytelling with daycare pupils, a kapihan and a lecture on the regional climate change situation at the Sea and Sky Hotel here.

The event will be capped by mangrove planting in barangay ParianOeste in Bauang town with more than 300 participants from a multi-sectoral group in attendance.

Cristina Arzadon, officer-in-charge of PIA in the Ilocos, said the agency has been in the thick of things preparing for the regional launch since June, the original nationwide launching date until it was moved to a later date.

"We sat down with experts on various fields from the environment and creative sector to ensure that the campaign will fulfill its desired impact," she said. 

The campaign also engaged youth participation through the PilipinasNatin, the youth volunteerism arm of the Presidential Communications Operations Office.

The campaign goes beyond promoting environmental protection. We need to bring climate change to the Filipino consciousness... that what goes on with the world's climate is no longer a weather phenomenon. Storm surges, floods and extreme heat are the new normal," she added.

Arzadon said the campaign is directed at a wide-ranging target audience from young children, youth, parents, professionals including the media.

"The storytelling will promote the love of reading among children. The storybook also provides values to young kids in their formative years on the importance of caring for Mother Earth," she added.

The reading session will involve at least 30 selected day care pupils here. The PIA commissioned teachers who are also social welfare officers in preparing the storybooks.

PIA Director General Jose Mari Oquiena was invited to the campaign launch and read the children's story entitled “Ang ating Mundo Noon at Ngayon”.

Other activities in line with the campaign are youth camps, campus tours with youth ambassadors, climate change awareness contest and conduct of climate change summit, among others. (Joanna

Mannix hails unity and service of village chiefs

LA UNION - “Patuloy tayong magkaisa upang masiguro natin ang isang tahimik, mapayapa, maayos at maunlad na La Union.  Tandaan natin na walang progresibong Pilipinas at La Union kung hindi nagkakaisa at masigabong nanunungkulan ang mga Punong Barangay.” (Let us continue to unite so we could safeguard peace, harmony, and growth in La Union. Let us also be reminded that the Philippines, La Union included, won’t be progressive if its people don’t work together.)

This was how Hon. Manuel Victor “Mannix” R. Ortega, Jr., President of the Liga ng mga Barangay-La Union Chapter and Ex-Officio Member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, appreciated the unity and support of the Punong Barangays of La Union that contributed to the unprecedented progress and development of the province during the 7th La Union Barangay Congress held on July 22-25, 2014 at Supreme Hotel, Baguio City with the theme “Kapia ken Talna…Babaen ti Napudno a Panagserbi ken Panagkaykaysa.”

He also cited a report from the La Union Police Provincial Office (LUPPO) led by PSSUPT Ramon L. Rafael, confirming the excellent peace and order situation in the province.  For the 1st quarter of 2014, there were only 865 recorded crimes as compared to 2,017 of the same period last year, resulting to a dramatic decrease of 1,152.

During the same quarter of 2014, the La Union Police Provincial Office cleared 362 incidents or 80.98% out of the 447 recorded index crimes.  The police also cleared 113 incidents or 64.57% out of 175 incidents.  The LUPPO acknowledged the unity and vigilance of Local Government Units, especially the Barangays, in the realization of a peaceful and orderly La Union.  The institutionalization of Barangay Peacekeeping Operations has also created a solid Police Visibility in the community through Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams (BPATS). 

This year’s congress included topics on Barangay Budgeting and Supply and Property Management presented by Dir. Virginia B. Karganilla of Department of Budget and Management-Region 1; Fund Management and Accountability, lectured by Dir. Lynn S.F. Sicangco of Commission on Audit-Region 1; Relation of La Union Disaster Situation to Philippine Disaster Management System and Barangay Governance and Disaster Risk Management care of Disaster Reduction and Management Officer Bobby B. Valdriz; and Community-Based Disaster Management and Hazard, Vulnerability, Capacity and Disaster Risk Management presented by Assistant Regional Director Imelda M. Social media effective tool against crime says La Union police

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union - For the La Union PNP, a slightly higher crime volume in the province for the first semester at 2,512 compared to only 2,492 during the same period last year was a result of a new crime-monitoring system.

Supt. Julius Suriben, San Fernando city's police chief, credits the power of technology and the social media which made it easier for the police to respond to crime incidents.

Suriben, who was named the best Police Community Relations Officer for 2014, said the police communicate with the other officers and the community using the short messaging service (SMS) and call through cellular phones and the new media.

The La Union police have opened their social media pages like facebook and twitter accounts which have become additional sources of information for crime incidents.

That the crime volume is up by few incidents was attributed to the new crime reporting system where violation of special laws like the use of seatbelt and helmet were included.

“Crime statistics may be high this semester but it implies one thing. Policemen are doing their tasks efficiently and effectively with the community’s shared efforts,” Suriben had said.

And as the PNP marks the Police Community Relations Month, both the city and provincial police have engaged the youth as their partner in monitoring schools against students who would violate the anti-bullying law.

A memorandum of understanding was signed with school officials of the Saint John Bosco College and public elementary and high schools making them a part of the efforts to prevent crimes inside the campuses.
Part of the agreement is to deputize students as junior police officers after they have undergone training on how to conduct crime monitoring. The youth were also involved in the PNP's advocacy campaigns against illegal drugs. (MCA/MPA/PIA1 La Union)

Baby Jacob is 100 millionth baby in Region 1

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union - A baby boy born at 12:19 am on Sunday was Ilocos Region's symbolic 100 millionth Filipino baby.

Baby Jacob Rico Bien Francisco, who was born at the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC), was one of 100 babies born in state hospitals all over the country who received the symbolic designation of “100,000,000th baby.”

Jacob’s parents Jovelyn and Marbien, of Balaoan, La Union, received P5,000-worth of baby starter kit from the Population Commission while the ITRMC waived delivery charges.

The search for babies to be born on July 27 marks the birth of the symbolic baby to be counted as the 100 millionth Filipino, based on the 2010 population projections by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Other state hospitals in 81 provinces and 17 cities to include one city each from Metro Cebu and Metro Davao participated in the search, PopCom Director Irma Yapit said.

The government said the 100 millionth Pinoy baby is a symbol of hope and a challenge to make every Filipino count in development by ensuring that each Pinoy is able to live in a healthy, productive and livable environment.

Yapit said the symbolic event also highlights the significance of the Philippine population management program in pursuing national and local development.

State agencies will closely monitor the symbolic baby’s development throughout his life stages, to ensure that his basic physiological (food, clothing and shelter) and psycho-social (health, education, and eventually employment) needs are met. (Miriam Aquino/MCA/MPA/PIA1 La Union)

What Ilocos residents expect of SONA


SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union - Moments before President Aquino stood to deliver his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 28, a cross section of communities in Region 1 was harping on a wish-list that the President should address ranging from soaring prices of oil and goods, education sector woes to the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP).

Rhoda Madrid of PagIBIG Fund said she had no doubt of the President's commitment to his "Tuwid na Daan (straight path)" policy which, she said, made him the best leader, by far.

Catherine Diaz, a public school teacher, expresses the hope that the current administration would focus more on the education sector.

“I hope that PNoy will grant our demand for salary increase and address the issue on shortage of books,” said Diaz.

State worker Joan Diaz said she expects concrete solutions to high prices of oil products and basic commodities.

Charity Frianeza, station manager of Radyo ng Bayan in Agoo, said she expects PNoy to report on his administration’s accomplishments and explain the DAP implementation.

Frianeza also said she expects government innovations on climate change mitigation and establishment of more infrastructure projects particularly the modernization of airports across the country including the San Fernando airport here.

Michael G. Garcia of USAID-Basa Pilipinas Project said he hoped the current administration would sustain the economy without violating the Constitution, referring to the DAP implementation which the Supreme Court had thumbed down as in violation of the Constitution.

In Ilocos Norte, Wilfredo Valdez, a garlic farmer-leader, said he expected the President to discuss his plans on agriculture modernization and policies on the pricing of garlic and rice in the market.

In Ilocos Sur, Santa Mayor Jeremy Jesus Bueno said he expected the President to prioritize the passage of the Freedom of Information bill for transparency and accountability on all public transactions.

In Dagupan, broadcast reporter Ruel de Guzman of Bombo Radyo admired how the President backed his facts on the country's progress with figures. He said PNoy showed how to be statesman by not focusing on the DAP controversy and holding his punches against arrested Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla because of the fund scam.
