Disaster response groups plant trees in San Roque watershed area

SAN MANUEL, Pangasinan - Despite monsoon rains last Wednesday, disaster response groups in the province climbed the San Roque Watershed Area to plant seedlings in observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month.

Some 1,000 molave seedlings provided by the San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC) were planted by at least 120 personnel, employees and volunteers from member agencies and organizations of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The tree planting activity, now on its fourth year, is a project of the provincial government in partnership with SRPC that aims to mitigate flooding in the province and prevent soil erosion.
Tom Valdez, SRPC vice president for community affairs, said tree planting is very important that it will not only serve as an aid in absorbing emitted carbon dioxide but also helps in stabilizing the soil to prevent flooding in low lying areas.

PDRRMC member agencies that participated include the Philippine National Police (PNP), Task Force Kalikasan, Philippine National Red Cross, Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Pangasinan Electric Cooperative (PANELCO), Provincial of Environment and National Resources Office (PENRO) and provincial government employees.
